What is Clever Copy? You are looking at Clever Copy now. Clever Copy is a free, fully scalable web site portal and news posting system. You can run it as a very simple blog or ramp it up to a full Content Management System. It is easy to setup, use and maintain requiring no previous knowledge of web portals, blogs, php, Cms's or databases. It uses a self optomizing database meaning that it always runs as fast as possible and works extremely well in a high traffic environment. What is Clever Copy?

Clever Copy is a dynamic news posting content management system. It allows you to set up a web site where you can post weekly, daily or even hourly news if you wish. More than that it is also a web portal, a place where surfers on the internet can congregate and get information. It is you that publishes that information using Clever Copy and providing your like minded visitors with the information they want to read.

How is it written?

Clever Copy is written using php and is backed onto a MySql database. As a site admin, you do not need to know anything about either php or MySql. Clever Copy provides you with a user interface that allows you to do what you want with it without having to understand anything technical at all.

What does it do?

The beauty of Clever Copy is that it will do anything you want it to. It is very adaptable and can lend itself to any kind of content or news publishing. This means that you can use it for virtually any type of web site. Typical uses of Clever Copy are as a clan site, a news posting site, a download site, an information portal, a blog, a forum site or a site just for fun. It's completely up to you.

How does it work?

Very simply. You upload the Clever Copy files and folders to your webspace, run the installer and then log in to start customising your site and posting your news. It really is that simple.

Who can run it?

Anyone can run Clever Copy and the requirements are a server with php enabled, 1Mb of webspace, a single MySql database and, recommended but not required, the GD2 graphics library. This describes most hosting accounts although you will probably need to check with your hosts if you have a free account. Some free accounts don't have a MySql database. Clever Copy is not suitable for a windows based server and the recommended server OS is unix.

Is Clever Copy really free?

There is no charge for Clever Copy - it is free. However, it is not licensed under the GPL/GNU licensing scheme. This means that it is not in the public domain. Full details of the license can be found in the admin panel on your site once you have set it up but you are free to modify it in any way for your personal use.

What are blocks?

Your news items are posted to the centre section of the site. Above and below the news postings are the site 'centre blocks'. These centre blocks contain things like the last x number of  forum posts or the welcome message. You can define which blocks are shown and who they are shown to. If you wanted only members of your site to see certain blocks, you can define that from the site admin panel. You can also turn them off altogether if they are not required.

On either side of your news posts are the site side 'blocks'. These are areas that can contain various things, for example, the main navigation menu is contained within a block, as is the site profile. Whilst these blocks are pre-defined, there are also six custom side blocks available to you and two centre blocks. You can decided what to put in these blocks and they will accept pretty much anything. They will take HTML, flash, iframes or whatever you have in mind. You can even run other scripts within them and, again, you decide who sees them. Essentially they give you the ability to add your own custom content.

What is included?

There is a long list of features and functions that come with the standard install of Clever Copy. This is a list of what you get:

Side Blocks:

1. Navigation menu block - Editable so that you can add or remove menu options. You can even define your own pages and include them on the menu.

2. Newsletter block - You can keep visitors coming back to your site over and over by sending them a newsletter. You can send newsletters as HTML or plain text. You can archive old newsletters and make them available from your navigation menu so visitors can read them.

3. Countdown timer block - Set a date in the future (your birthday for example) and the block will countdown to that event telling visitors how much time remains before the event. When the event arrives, it will display any message you define.

4. Login block - Allows your visitors to log in to their user account on your site. It also shows non members what they cannot see until they have joined your site.

5. Random picture block - Shows a picture at random from those you have uploaded.

6. Custom side blocks 1 to 6 - Six customisable side blocks that can accept any content you want to put into them.

7. Visitors online block - Shows how many people are browsing your site right now and shows logged in members. The site admin can also see users IP addresses.

8. Recent archives block - Shows the last x number of news posts. Once a news post is removed from the centre news section, it will appear in here. You can define how many archives to show from your admin panel.

9. Random headlines block - Displays x number of news post headlines taken at random from your news postings. The number of headlines shown can be set from the admin panel.

10. Search entire site block - Site visitors are able to search through old postings to find items related to the keywords they enter.

11. Profile block - Set up your own site profile. Display information about yourself or your site.

12. Net radio block - Lets your visitors listen to various radio stations from around the world.

13. Search acronyms block - If your visitors have ever wondered just what IMHO means etc, this will tell them.

14. Random quotes block - Displays a quote or saying at random from over 400 quotes. That's more than one new quote every day for a year.

15. Moon phase block - Displays the current moon phase.

16. Threat level block - Displays the current threat level from the homeland security site.

17. Solar activity block - Shows current solar activity in real time. Lets your visitors get the latest space weather.

18. General block - Your visitors can view your sites RSS feed, send you an email, bookmark your site and more.

19. Scroll block - Scroll any message you want your visitors to see. You can include HTML if you want.

20. Donations block - Got a PayPal account? Let your visitors contribute to the costs of running your site.

21. Monthly archives block - Allows your visitors to view archived news posts by month and year.

22. Gallery block - Displays an image at random from your site gallery.

23. Search archives block - Unlike the search entire site block, this allows visitors to search only the news archives using keywords.

24. Search by category block - Unlike other search blocks, this allows visitors to search only particular categories in the news archives using keywords.

25. Syndicated news block - Allows you to show syndicated news headlines from other sites.

Centre blocks:

1. A welcome message - Show your visitors some introductory text for your site.

2. News ticker - A scrolling ticker. Show the latest news in your ticker.

3. Show last x forum posts - 4 centre blocks that allow you to show the last x number of posts made to the forums if you are using one of the following - The inbuilt Clever Copy forums, PhpBB2 forums, Class-1 forums or phorum forums.

3. Custom top centre block - A customisable block that will appear at the top of your site.

4. News posts - The 'meat' of your site. The news postings themselves.

5. Custom bottom centre block - A customisable block that will appear underneath your news posts.

Navigation menu items:

1. About - The very page you are currently reading. You can define what appears here.

2. Downloads - A powerful download manager with inbuilt rating and review system. Share your files with your visitors and allow them to rate and review the files. Fully customisable from your admin panel, you can turn rating and reviewing on or off as required.

3. Forums - The inbuilt Clever Copy forums. Functions much the same way as most forums do. Lets your members post to your forums.

4. Gallery - An inbuilt gallery where you can set up albums and allow your visitors to vote on images. With inbuilt image protection system, your images can remain safe on your site without anyone being able to hotlink them or steal them. Naturally, if someone wants an image they will probably get it but why not try to download an image from this sites gallery to see how difficult this will be. Images are also protected from search engines so that they don't appear in SE's like google from the outset. Most image theft is from search engine results and, frankly, that's not the sort of visitor you want on your site. By preventing the SE's from listing your images, these people won't even get the chance to try and steal them!

5. Guestbook - Let your visitors sign and read your guestbook.

6. Member profiles - Browse the profiles of members on your site.

7. My account - Members can view and edit their account details.

8. Newsletter archives - Visitors can read all the old newsletters you have sent.

9. Play millionaire - Just a bit of fun for your visitors. They can try to win a million points.

10. Post news- Visitors can post news to your site. News is the life blood of any news posting site and getting new content is always difficult. Your visitors can provide you with fresh content. naturally you decide whether to post that news or not.

11. Privacy - Your sites privacy statement.

12. Private messages - Read or send private messages to other site members.

13. Read diaries - Read what other members have written in their diaries or journal. Members have the option to make entries to their diary either public or personal.

14. Register - Allows visitors to create a members account on your site.

15. Syndicate news - Allows visitors to your site to show your headlines on their site. A great way to get traffic.

16. Tell a friend - Lets visitors email the details of your site to a friend and ask them to visit.

This is just a selection of what Clever Copy can do and what is included but it is not a full list. As you can see Clever Copy is indeed a fully featured script and in its' standard install provides the average user with everything he or she needs to run a complete web site.

Not enough for you?

If all the above is not enough for you, you have the option to purchase add ons. Add ons currently available are:

1. Banner manager - With the banner manager installed you can accept paid adverts on your site for both top banners  and side banners. You can set the cost per click, the cost per number of views or the cost per number of weeks. It is very flexible and allows you to tightly control how and where banners are shown. You can even add your own banners. With automatic invoicing, you don't even have to chase your advertisers for money. The banner manager will automatically suspend their link until their invoice has been paid!

2. Block pack - The block pack contains four blocks. With the Weather block installed you can let your visitors check the weather forecast for many cities around the world. The Block Pack also contains the translator block, a block that allows visitors to translate your site from English into Dutch, French, German, Greek, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish using the Alta Vista translation engine.

3. Bulk uploader  - With the bulk uploader installed you can upload as many images as you like all at the same time and you can also edit individual images and list all images in your gallery as well as providing your site visitors with an image search function.

4. Event calendar - With the event calendar installed you can show upcoming events on your site by adding an event to a date on the calendar. If you don't want to use events, the calendar can be used as an ordinary calendar.

5. FAQ's manager - With the Faq's Manager installed you can add your own FAQ categories and questions for your site visitors to browse and provide them with the answers to their questions. They can also ask questions via the Faq's Manager meaning that you can continually update the FAQ's and save yourself the trouble of replying to the same emails over and over.

6. Google ads and search - Google Adsense and Search blocks allow you to run your adsense adverts on your site. If you do not currently have a Google Adsense account getting one is easy and showing adverts is a good way to make an income from your site.

7. Link removal - Link removal gives you a license to run Clever Copy without showing the powered by link back to the Clever Copy site. Essentially no one will know that your site is running under Clever Copy.

8. Pay per click - With the PPC manager installed you can accept paid text adverts on your site just like google ads. Your visitors can decide how to run their ad campaign and have their own PPC account manager where they can view the current status of their PPC campaign. Automatic invoicing & checking means that you never have to chase your advertisers for payment. Once their invoice has been generated, their ad is suspended automatically until they have paid. Giving your advertisers a high level of control means that they are far more likely to take out further ads since it's a simple process for both them and you.

9. Poll manager - With the poll manager installed, you can run polls or surveys on your site. Visitors will keep returning to your site to vote in the polls or see the results.

10. Shout box - With the shout box installed your visitors can 'shout' to one another in real time. Great for getting visitors back to your site!

11. Web link exchange - With the web links exchange block installed, your visitors can add their site to yours. Naturally before they are able to do this, they must have your link added to their site. Automatic reciprocal link checking built into web links exchange means that you never have to check to make sure your link remains in place. Clever Copy automatically checks it and if your link is not found then you can set Clever Copy to automatically delete their link from your site.
